Cell Phone Pricing - What are you Paying for?

How much does a cell phone cost? How do you choose a cell phone in your price range? Well, there are no easy answers to these questions, because there are dozens of aspects which can influence pricing, both of new phones and of used cell phones. It can be confusing to try to figure out which phones work with which carriers, and which carriers offer optimal coverage in certain areas-not to mention, which cell phone would be the best choice in various pricing levels.

Here are some of the main factors which often affect the prices for various cell phone models:

  • Type of technology in the phone, whether it is GSM, CDMA, or iDEN
  • Display type and size
  • Types of features included in the phone, such as Bluetooth or parental control
  • Extra functionalities, such as a camera or an MP3 player in the phone
  • Accessories included with the phone
  • Size, weight, and shape of the phone
  • Any unique claim of the phone, such as offering the largest memory space or being the thinnest phone

The above factors can sway the pricing of both new and used cell phones. It would not be unusual, for example, for cheap Verizon cell phones with just a few features and accessories to be less expensive than used Blackberry cell phones or used AT&T cell phones which contain several exclusive extras and unique features. In addition, several vendors such as DotCells.com, AT&T, and Verizon offer used alternatives that may include free shipping and the ability to buy in bulk.

It is possible, too, that market fluctuations can cause variations in cell phone pricing. For instance, copper constitutes between 18 - 22 percent of most cell phones; therefore, if the price for copper futures rises, it becomes more expensive for companies to manufacture new cell phones. Other materials that are typically found in cell phones (though usually in much lesser amounts) include plastic, glass, aluminum, iron, silicon, nickel, tin, gold, palladium, and silver.

If you are looking to purchase a good cell phone with a decent amount of features and extras, and you do not want to spend hundreds of dollars, looking at used cell phones is probably your best bet. You can find dozens-if not more-models and styles of used Verizon cell phones, used Sprint cell phones, used Blackberry cell phones, and used AT&T cell phones, along with several other brands including online vendors like DotCells.com and Simply Cellular. Simply do some searches on EBay or another online auction website.

When doing your searches, be sure to carefully read the ads. Not all used Sprint cell phones are alike, even if they are the same model and same style, after all. Some may be in like-new condition; others may have slight scratches or may be missing an important item, such as a battery cover. Each seller prices his own used cell phones as he sees fit; if you do not like one seller's pricing on used Verizon cell phones, look at another seller. Several vendors may feature a rating system as well. For example, DotCells.com provides a rating for each individual phone it sells on its site.

If you are in need of a cell phone quickly, however, you may want to opt for a new cell phone. Although the cost will be likely be higher, you will not have any worries about carrier compatibility, getting a SIMS card for a used cell phone, or waiting for your phone to be shipped.

I-pod for my 12 year old daughter for Christmas?

Hi! My 12 year old daughter is out of the toy age and has asked for nothing but an I-pod for Christmas. She saw one in a Toys R Us ad on sale for $15. I figured for that price, it's probably not a great quality one. What kind would you suggest for a first time I-pod for a child of this age. Also, what is the difference in an I-pod and an MP3 player?

An i-pod is a brand-name mp3 player, by Apple Corporation. And as far as mp3 players go, I recommend Zune, made by Microsoft. They're more attractive, and i like the player better than iTunes. Not to mention zunes also can listen to the radio, and they can share music with other zunes via radio waves, if the zune is close by. Zunes also have more customizing features. Like some ipods, you can put pictures on the zune. But with the zune, you can make those pictures you're background on the zune. As far as prices go, an 8 GB zune [ Holds up to: 2,000 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 25 hours of video.] is $150. The 8GB iPod nano, for the same price, holds 2,000 songs, only 8 hours of video and no pictures.
Now, since your daughter is only 12, i don't really think she would need 8GB. But that's as small as iPods go, unless you get a shuffle, which holds no pictures or video, and with no way to choose which song to listen to... It just shuffles them. Microsoft offers a 4GB zune, which Holds up to: 1,000 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 12 hours of video, for only $130. This seems like the more reasonable choice. It comes in black, green, pink and red.
So far, the only thing going for the iPod is that it comes in 9 colors, instead of four.

Good luck with your shopping!
